Fighting Poverty For Peace
Bank President James Wolfensohn has called on the international
development community to recommit to fighting poverty and meeting the
Millennium Development Goals in 2004. In assessing 2003 and outlining the
challenges for the coming year, he said that while the focus in 2003 had
been on major crises in the Middle East, Latin America and South Asia,
poverty remained a major underlying factor in the world's problems. The
Bank's Global Economic Prospects 2004, released earlier this year,
estimated that about 1.1 billion people were living on less than $1 a day
and about 2.7 billion continued to live on less than $2 a day. "For us at
this institution, we're trying to remind the world that the real issues
that we have to confront, which is at the base of so much that has
happened, is the conquest of poverty," he said in his end-of-year message
to staff and the Bank's partners in the international development
community.
